Description:
Use traditional metalsmithing techniques and sculptural metal clay components to create a multi-dimensional bi-metal statement necklace that will surely become your next show-stopper. This two-day, in-depth, technique-driven workshop will have metalsmiths begging for more metal clay and metal clay enthusiasts wanting to explore new possibilities in fabrication.
Students will Learn:
You’ll join master instructor and goldsmith Julie Sanford as she shares tips and tricks using traditional metal fabrication and metal clay components together, taking your skills and imagination to a whole new level. You’ll be introduced to the properties of metal clay and its history as you design and create a dramatic necklace around a focal stone. Techniques in mold making, metal clay casting, wet and dry clay finishing, clay firing, gold overlay, layout and design, custom prong fabrication, multi-step soldering, stone setting, chain making and professional finishing will all be covered in this comprehensive metals workshop. Students will be able to explore creative new design possibilities and discover ways to use the combined techniques of metal clay and metal fabrication to develop their personal style and influence their current body of work.
Prerequisites:
Students should have some soldering experience.
Project completion:
Project will be completed in class
Minimum Age Requirement:
At least 18 years old.
Supplies to Bring:
Small X-acto knife (not a box cutter), small spray bottle, needle tool or t-pin, nail file, small found objects to mold (sticks, leaves, shells etc.), focal stone (flat back up to 2.5 inch or 65 mm), eye magnification if you need it (reading glasses orOoptivisor).
Materials in Kit:
Fine silver PMC 16g, molding compound, sterling wire, sterling jump rings, studio consumables (butane, solder, flux, patina, etc.), sandpaper and polishing cloth, full written instructions, use of shared 22k gold overlay.
Limit:
One seat per person per class.
