Welcome to Milwaukee The largest city in the state of Wisconsin and the 22nd largest city (by population) in the United States, Milwaukee is approximately 90 miles north of Chicago on the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan. It is served by Mitchell International Airport and is convenient to Chicago O'Hare International Airport. Once infamous for its breweries and factories, today Milwaukee offers a diverse and lively cultural scene. Bold, beautiful, and progressive may just be the perfect summation of what Milwaukee is. It's a place where you can experience the very spirit and values America is built on. This Midwestern city offers arts and entertainment, coupled with an exciting variety of shopping choices and eclectic dining at all price levels. Milwaukee's big-city advantages are enhanced by a friendly, small-town spirit and old-world charm. Local historians attribute the name "Milwaukee" to a word derived from the Potawatomi tribe meaning "council grounds." The city's neighborhoods weave a patchwork of diversity, as characteristics of the German heritage blend with influences of many other cultures. Italian, Irish, Polish, African-American, and Hispanic neighborhoods, along with many ethnic restaurants and boutique shops on Brady Street and in the Third Ward, make up the fabric of Milwaukee. Historic churches, neighborhood shops, Victorian worker's cottages, and industrialists' castles abound and lend their neighborhoods a venerable air. In the face of all the progress, the traditions and values that make Milwaukee remain constant. The strongly held ideals of family, ethnic and cultural diversity, and warm hospitality, make Milwaukee a genuine destination and a great place to visit for our Bead&Button Show attendees. |
