Excellence in Bead Artistry Award - We honor Anne Mitchell
Award to be presented Saturday, June 6 during the Bead Social and Auction Night

We are pleased to announce that Anne Mitchell is the recipient of the 2009 Excellence in Bead Artistry award. This year's $1,000 gift certificate award is underwritten by Shipwreck Beads. Thank you Shipwreck for sponsoring this special award and recognition. As Anne will often mention, she did not choose her artistic career, it chose her. Anne received her MFA graduate degree from Boston University. For the next 20 years, Anne worked in every major city in the U.S., Europe, and South America as a professional lighting designer. In 1996, by chance, Anne picked up a book on chain making. She started teaching these techniques as a way of relaxing from her corporate job. Over the last decade, Anne started working and playing with metal. The precision of the medium is what drew her into the exploration of smithing. She is self-taught in soldering techniques and fusing with fine silver, and she later added these techniques to her ever-expanding teaching schedule. Anne uses fine silver exclusively in her jewelry work. |

Anne has been an instructor at the Bead&Button Show since 2001, which was her first national show. She started out with three classes, and as each year passed, the class list increased until she could no longer fit any more classes into the schedule. In 2009, Anne is slated to teach 12 classes for the Bead&Button Show, and of course, her renowned Viking Knit woven chain is part of the mix. Anne has self-published a book titled "Chain Making Techniques" and a booklet called "The Low-Tech Bench." Anne's mission is to educate students, not only in creative design, but in safety issues by eductating and promoting a safe and toxin-free work environment for studio artists. |
