Meet Andrea Guarino-Slemmons Andrea Guarino-Slemmons - has devoted her whole working life to the glass arts. Starting with stained glass while in her teens she felt the medium too constraining. Fused glass was her next choice but while using a torch to make odd shaped glass pieces and stringers to decorate her work she fell in love with lampworking. That was nineteen years ago and she has been making art glass beads full time ever since. The complexity of her beads has evolved with her experience and the availability of new tools, materials and colors. Andrea loves working with metal foils, leaf and various chemicals to create reactions in glass. Finding glass that reacts to create exciting new colors is a joy. Andrea makes a wide range of bead styles and sizes and is continually working on new designs. Lapidary equipment is used to create her special faceted beads. During the last several years Andrea has added silver work to her beads. This has included both PMC and sheet silver creations for earrings and bracelets. She shows her work in two or three major shows and teaches both in her state-of-the-art teaching studio in Port Townsend and in studios across the country. She has also taught in many foreign countries. |

Artistic Glass Beads and Textured Silver Bead Caps This Master's Class will be about manipulating and artistically changing the appearance of Effetre/Moretti glass and embellishing Art Glass Beads with silver cores and textured silver bead caps. This will include working both on and off mandrel. Day 1 and 2 of this Masters Class will include the following: • Applying metals such as silver leaf and foil to the bead as well as learning the technique of fine silver fuming. • Working with reactive silver glass using special techniques to achieve the most dramatic colors. • Using glass powders to create new and unique surface colors. • Making tightly wound, uniform diameter twisted canes and applying them to beads. • Applying fine silver mesh. • Working with dichroic glass. • Working on 3/32, 3/16 and ¼ inch mandrels. Day 3 you will learn to create beautiful textures on silver sheet and fabricate silver to form bead caps. This will include instruction in the use of special tooling to punch the center hole, aligning it perfectly each time. We will then rivet your bead caps onto your beads using silver tubing. Some of the smaller beads can be cored with silver tubing which can be used on many different interchangeable bracelets and jewelry. Bead caps take art glass beads to the next level and make them closer to fine jewelry and more acceptable to a broader range of collectors, designers and customers. |

What is an advanced lampworking student - and do I qualify? Here is our definition of an advanced lampworking student: This student has considerable experience on a dual-fuel torch such as a Nortel minor or mega, or a Mini CC or similar torch. The student must be able to comfortably form and shape a variety of bead shapes with ease. In addition, the student should have a thorough understanding of how to keep and hold a form while decorating a bead. The student should also be able to make stringers and apply them in a consistent manner. Experience solely on a hot-head torch is not sufficient experience for this caliber of class. This is not a beginners class. We do not recommend that beginners apply as the pace and curriculum of the class will be geared to the advanced lampworking student. If you have any questions or concerns about your experience and ability level, please e-mail Andrea ahead of time to review your qualifications. |
